The Montauk Club

An eigth avenue view of the Montauk Club. Inspired by the palazzi of Venice, this Park Slope treasure was designed by Francis H Kimball and completed in 1891. The club, a Venetian Gothic palazzo, has a brick and terracotta facade that mixes Native American and Renaissance motif. There are loggias, balconies, and traceried Gothic windows along with a band of carved Native American heads above the entrance. These and a narrative frieze above the third story windows celebrate the exploits of the Mohawks, an East Long Island Native American tribe.
